AI data centers become a focus of 2026 campaign ads

Key takeaways

  • Most ads with a clear position criticized the facilities or sought more regulation.
  • Campaigns spent an estimated on the digital ads reviewed.
  • The analysis covered races from statewide offices to local government.

Hundreds of campaigns run data center ads

AI data centers are appearing in digital campaign advertising across contests for the U.S. Senate, governor, county commission and city council. Absecon Group identified 717 campaigns that ran ads mentioning data centers on Meta platforms and YouTube, Campaigns & Elections reported.

The group classified 342 of those campaigns as Democratic, 236 as Republican and 58 as independent, third-party or nonpartisan. Among 685 campaigns whose ads expressed a clear position, 636 portrayed data centers negatively or called for additional regulation. Ten defended the facilities.

The advertising connects data centers, which support artificial intelligence systems, with concerns about water and electricity costs. A CNN/SSRS poll found that nearly nine in 10 Americans were more concerned than excited about AI’s potential. A similar share expressed that view about the expansion of data centers supporting AI.

Spending is concentrated among a few campaigns

Campaigns spent an estimated on digital advertising that mentioned data centers, Absecon Group found. Ads criticizing the facilities accounted for more than 99% of that spending.

Most campaigns spent less than while eight spent more than and 38 exceeded. The five highest-spending campaigns represented 43% of all spending identified in the analysis.

The number of campaigns entering the discussion also increased during Absecon Group’s review. Twenty-seven campaigns began running digital ads about data centers during one period; a little more than two weeks later, that figure had risen to 41.

The analysis covered Meta platforms and YouTube, not all political advertising. AdImpact separately counted 55 broadcast advertisements from 46 advertisers in July and August, compared with 42 data center advertisements aired from January through June.

What to watch

  • Whether more campaigns begin advertising on data center policy
  • How ads address electricity and water costs
  • Whether broadcast advertising continues to expand
  • Which regulatory proposals campaigns place in their messages
