Key takeaways
Rep. Nick Begich’s congressional office said 14 bills he sponsored passed the U.S. House, the most for a first-term House member. Six also passed the Senate and received the president’s signature.
The bills focus largely on Alaska Native land rights, energy, resource development and military readiness. Four of the enacted measures concern land ownership or federal benefit rules affecting Alaska Native people and corporations.
H.R. 2815, the Cape Fox Land Entitlement Finalization Act of 2025, lets Cape Fox Corporation select land outside its immediate township to complete its remaining entitlement. The measure includes about 180 acres of surface land in the Tongass National Forest, with the surface conveyed to Cape Fox and subsurface rights conveyed to Sealaska Corporation. It became law May 19, 2026.
H.R. 410, the Alaska Native Vietnam Era Veterans Land Allotment Extension Act of 2025, extends the application deadline for eligible Alaska Native Vietnam-era veterans or their heirs to seek up to 160 acres of federal land. The deadline moved from Dec. 29, 2025, to Dec. 29, 2030. It became law Dec. 26, 2025.
H.R. 43, the Alaska Native Village Municipal Lands Restoration Act of 2025, ends a requirement that village corporations transfer certain land to the state to hold for future municipal governments. Those lands can remain under village corporation control for local use and development. It became law July 7, 2025.
H.R. 42, the Alaska Native Settlement Trust Eligibility Act, excludes settlement trust payments to Alaska Native people who are elderly, blind or disabled from income calculations for certain needs-based federal programs, including SNAP. It became law July 7, 2025.
