Cooper said U.S. forces supported the oil transport while assisting commercial vessels using the strait.
The figures describe two different measures of activity. The 1 billion-barrel figure refers to the volume of crude oil transported, while the figure of more than 2,000 refers to commercial ship transits. Cooper tied both figures to U.S. military assistance, but his statement did not mean that every commercial vessel carried crude oil.
What the statement establishes
The commander described the billion-barrel mark as a milestone reached over a period measured in months, rather than on a single day. His remarks place the oil movement and the commercial transits within the same recent period of military conflict with Iran.
Centcom’s role, as Cooper described it, was to support transport and assist ship transits. His wording did not characterize all of those movements as U.S.-operated shipments. The crude oil belonged to the transported commercial volume, while the military’s stated involvement concerned support for its passage.
The statement puts a numerical measure on recent activity through the Strait of Hormuz: more than 1 billion barrels of crude and more than 2,000 assisted commercial ship transits during the period Cooper identified.
