Impeachment pressure tests Democrats’ focus on costs

An unresolved choice

House Democrats face pressure to address impeachment while trying to keep public attention on household costs. Green, a Texas Democrat preparing to leave Congress, initiated another effort to impeach Trump in September, and the House voted to sidestep it.

Jeffries has not committed the Democratic caucus to a course of action. Asked about impeachment, the New York Democrat said he had not “ruled anything in” or “ruled anything out.” That leaves room for further demands from members who want the House to act.

Green also pursued impeachment during Trump’s first term, beginning in 2017. The House later impeached Trump in 2019 over Ukraine and again in 2021. Those earlier actions do not determine how Democrats will respond to a new proposal.

Competing messages

The immediate political challenge is one of focus. Democrats want to discuss the prices of eggs, milk, gasoline and other everyday expenses. A renewed impeachment fight could instead require lawmakers and party leaders to answer repeated questions about whether they support removing Trump from office.

The caucus has not adopted a unified impeachment position. Green’s action shows that individual members can bring the issue before the House even when leaders are emphasizing other subjects.

What comes next

The next steps depend on whether Green or another member brings forward an additional impeachment measure and how House leaders handle it. Jeffries’ open-ended response means the leadership question remains unsettled.

Another point to watch is whether Democrats pursue impeachment only against Trump or also seek action involving administration officials. Any such move would create a separate decision for lawmakers rather than automatically following from the earlier Trump impeachments.
