House Republicans are considering a possible leadership shakeup that could put Jim Jordan in contention to lead the party in the minority.

Key takeaways
Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio has emerged in internal Republican discussions as a possible leader of the party in the House if Democrats win control in November, Fox News reported.
Several House Republicans told Fox News that losing the majority could bring changes across their leadership team. One lawmaker identified Speaker Mike Johnson as the first leader who could be displaced and raised the possibility of a contest between Jordan and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise. Another described Jordan as the leading name in conversations about the minority leader position.
Those discussions remain informal. Jordan, the House Judiciary Committee chairman and a prominent ally of President Donald Trump, has not publicly announced a leadership bid. He recently said his focus was on Republicans retaining control of the House, and a Republican lawmaker said Jordan had dismissed conversations about a future leadership role.
Jordan has traveled around the country during August and October to campaign for House Republicans. His appearances have supported both vulnerable members from the party’s more moderate wing and conservative members closely aligned with Trump.
That activity has helped Jordan expand his relationships beyond the House Freedom Caucus, where he built much of his earlier support. Republican lawmakers discussing the possible leadership change pointed to his recognition among Republican voters and his ability to attract people to campaign events.
Jordan previously sought the speakership in October 2023 after Kevin McCarthy was removed. He received strong support from conservatives but faced opposition from moderate Republicans, some of whom said Jordan’s allies pressured them over their votes. Jordan did not secure the position, and Johnson became speaker after several weeks of unsuccessful efforts to select a replacement.
