Maryland AG declines to reopen Tawon Boyd death investigation

Maryland’s attorney general will not reopen the investigation into Tawon Boyd’s 2016 death. The decision leaves the earlier investigative process closed and means the attorney general’s office will not return to evidence gathering or conduct a new review as part of that investigation.

The refusal to reopen is a procedural decision about whether to restart investigative work. It is not, by itself, a new conclusion about the circumstances of Boyd’s death. It also does not revise an earlier record, create a new official finding or begin a separate legal proceeding.

The year 2016 refers to when Boyd died. The attorney general’s action concerns the present status of the investigation and whether the state office will examine the death again.

Procedural effect

The immediate result is that the attorney general’s office will take no renewed investigative action under this decision. Reopening an investigation would have allowed investigators to return to the case, review material and determine whether further investigative steps were warranted. Declining to reopen keeps that process from starting.
