Senators leave briefing frustrated

Democratic and Republican lawmakers emerged from a closed-door Senate Armed Services Committee briefing Thursday dissatisfied with answers from Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon’s policy chief.

Their frustration focused on two major foreign-policy matters: the ongoing Iran war and the Trump administration’s National Defense Strategy. Senators from both parties said Colby did not offer the clarity they wanted on either subject.

The bipartisan response made the dispute broader than a disagreement between the administration and one political party. The complaints came from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle after they heard directly from the Pentagon official responsible for presenting the administration’s defense policy.

A difficult start behind closed doors

The meeting began on a difficult note, with Colby opening the briefing immediately. Because the session was closed to the public, the exchange itself was not conducted in an open hearing where voters could hear the questions and answers.

The briefing placed the administration’s wider defense strategy alongside questions about the active conflict with Iran. Lawmakers’ comments afterward showed that they were seeking clearer explanations of both the government’s immediate approach to the war and its broader defense plans.
