Eric Toney was projected to win the Republican primary for Wisconsin attorney general, and Josh Kaul was projected to win the Democratic primary. The NBC News results page labeled both party contests uncontested.

Toney and Kaul received equal projected-winner designations from the NBC News Decision Desk. The page displayed zero votes and 0.0% for each contest at its latest listed update, Sept. 22 at 3:44 p.m. Eastern time.

The projections identify the Republican and Democratic nominees even though the displayed vote totals do not record ballots for either candidate. No other candidates were listed in either attorney general primary.

How the results are measured

The results page identifies the Associated Press as the source of its vote data and the NBC News Decision Desk as the organization making the race projections. A projection and a reported vote count are presented separately: the page names each projected winner while its numerical tables remain at zero.

The page defines “expected vote” as an estimate of the total number of votes anticipated once counting is complete. That estimate can draw on the number of early ballots and information county election officials give vote reporters on Election Day.

Expected vote is not a final certified tally. NBC News says the estimate can change as it receives more information. The attorney general page does not display a nonzero tally for either party contest, so the projected outcomes are the central result shown for both Toney and Kaul.
