Trump and Xi describe White House talks as productive

Leaders emphasize progress

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping offered positive assessments Friday after meeting during Xi’s three-day state visit to Washington.

Speaking at a White House tea with first lady Melania Trump, Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, Trump said the countries had made significant progress and described the visit as positive for both. He also said American farmers would be pleased with what had occurred, without outlining a specific new commitment in those remarks.

Xi thanked the president and first lady for hosting the visit. Speaking through a translator, he praised the attention given to each detail and said the two presidents were guiding the direction of U.S.-China relations.

Xi said the leaders had agreed to add substance to their earlier vision of a constructive relationship marked by strategic stability. He said that relationship would rest on respect, fairness and reciprocity.

Trade and future meetings

The Washington discussions covered trade practices, artificial intelligence and strategic stability between the two countries. Xi’s visit came four months after an agreement involving Chinese commitments on rare-earth minerals, agricultural purchases, trade and investment.

Trump had presented that earlier agreement as a gain for American farmers, manufacturers and workers. Its commitments had progressed unevenly by the time of the latest meetings.

Xi said he expected two more opportunities to meet Trump during 2026: the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in China in November and the Group of 20 summit scheduled for December at Trump’s Doral resort in Miami. Trump said the two leaders would continue speaking frequently.
