Trump describes military functions

President Donald Trump said his planned triumphal arch near Arlington Memorial Bridge would be converted into a military complex capable of supporting drones, snipers and ammunition storage.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said the 250-foot structure would have the ability to deploy large numbers of drones quickly. He also said snipers could be positioned on the roof and plaza areas and that the complex would hold large quantities of sniper ammunition.

Trump said he agreed to the conversion at the request of the U.S. military and for national security purposes. Fox News reported on the announcement.

The arch is modeled on Paris’ Arc de Triomphe and is intended to greet people crossing the bridge from Arlington National Cemetery into Washington. Plans call for a granite exterior topped by three golden statues.

Reviews and objections remain

The National Capital Planning Commission has approved the location and preliminary plans, but the project must undergo additional review. Construction had previously been expected to begin in September 2026.

Preservation advocates, lawmakers and veterans have criticized the project, arguing that a 250-foot arch could interfere with views of the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Opponents have also questioned whether federal law requires Congress to approve the project.

The military features described by Trump add a security function to a project initially presented as a commemorative monument for the United States’ 250th anniversary. The next steps will determine how those functions are incorporated into the design and considered during the remaining review process.
