Trump, Xi agree to create AI safety channel

The United States and China will create a communication channel for incidents involving advanced AI systems following a three-day summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington. The channel will address the technology’s risks and benefits, with a dedicated dialogue planned for November.

The two governments also moved to improve contacts between their militaries. China’s Foreign Ministry said the countries agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening crisis communications and preventing military crises.

Trade and investment talks

Trump and Xi extended a trade truce for two months. The governments will continue work on reducing reciprocal tariffs covering about billion in goods, with most reductions focused on products described as non-sensitive, including agricultural goods and holiday decorations.

The White House said China agreed to import at least 10 million metric tons of U.S. coal in both 2027 and 2028. The two sides are also discussing U.S. concerns about rare-earth supplies, with the goal of restoring shipments to appropriate levels.

A Board of Trade began operating during the summit to address selected issues between the countries. The governments also established a Board of Investment to discuss possible investments, barriers to investment and other commercial concerns.

Trump and Xi agreed to meet again at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, in November. They also plan to meet later at the Group of 20 gathering at Trump National Doral Miami in Florida.
