North Dakota’s State House District 2 race is contested in the 2026 general election, with Republican incumbents Donald Longmuir and Bert Anderson running. Voters will decide the race on Nov. 3, 2026.
The contest stands out because both candidates are current officeholders and both are Republicans. That means the party label beside their names will be the same, leaving voters to consider the candidates individually as they make their choice.
The District 2 contest
This is a race for the North Dakota State House, the chamber in which representatives take part in writing and voting on state laws. District 2 voters will choose between the candidates in the general election.
The race is listed as contested, meaning more than one candidate is seeking the office. It is not a matchup between nominees from different political parties: Longmuir and Anderson are both identified as Republicans.
Because both are incumbents, each is already serving in public office. The ballot will therefore present a contest between two current officeholders rather than one incumbent and one challenger.
Donald Longmuir
Donald Longmuir is running as a Republican and an incumbent in the District 2 State House race. His name will appear in the same contest as Bert Anderson’s in the Nov. 3 general election.
Longmuir enters the election with the status of a current officeholder. In this race, however, incumbency does not distinguish him from his opponent because Anderson is also an incumbent. Likewise, Longmuir’s Republican affiliation does not create a party contrast because Anderson carries the same affiliation.
Voters considering Longmuir will therefore be comparing one Republican incumbent directly with another Republican incumbent for representation in the state House.
Bert Anderson
Bert Anderson is running as a Republican and an incumbent in the District 2 State House race. His name will appear in the same contest as Donald Longmuir’s in the Nov. 3 general election.
Anderson also enters the election as a current officeholder. As with Longmuir, neither his incumbency nor his Republican affiliation separates him from the other candidate on those basic ballot descriptors.
Voters considering Anderson will be making the same kind of direct comparison: one Republican incumbent against another Republican incumbent for the District 2 state House office.
What voters should know
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. This is the general election, when District 2 voters will make their choice in the contested state House race.
The central feature of the contest is straightforward: both candidates share the same party affiliation and incumbent status. The ballot choice is Donald Longmuir or Bert Anderson, two Republicans who currently hold office.
As the election approaches, voters can watch for candidate statements and campaign appearances that draw clearer distinctions between them. Any policy positions announced during the campaign could help voters compare how each candidate would approach the work of representing District 2 in the North Dakota State House.
