U.S., China agree to tariff cuts and AI incident channel

Tariffs included in eight-point consensus

The United States and China agreed to lower tariffs on billion worth of goods that each country imports from the other. The trade agreement emerged from President Trump’s summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping during Xi’s three-day state visit to Washington, D.C.

The tariff action is one piece of an eight-point consensus reached during the visit. Its scope is reciprocal: the United States will reduce tariffs on covered Chinese goods, while China will reduce tariffs on covered U.S. goods. Each side’s covered imports are valued at billion.

New talks will address artificial intelligence

The two governments also agreed to launch new talks on AI and establish a channel for AI incidents. That adds a technology component to the same eight-point consensus as the tariff cuts.

The channel creates a direct avenue for the two countries to address incidents involving AI. The new talks give officials a separate process for discussing AI after the presidential summit. The consensus therefore covers both trade action and continued government-to-government contact on an emerging technology issue.

Implementation comes next

Attention now shifts to how the two governments carry out the tariff reductions and organize the AI discussions. Key process questions include which goods are covered, when the lower tariffs take effect, which officials will use the incident channel and how the broader AI talks will be structured.
