Virginia early voting starts as mail limits stay blocked

Early voting is underway

Early voting has begun in Virginia, allowing ballots to be cast before Election Day. The start of voting is an active step in the election process: Votes can now be submitted through the early-voting option under Virginia’s current rules. It does not, by itself, change the separate rules that govern mail ballots.

The timing matters because a voting period can open while disputes over other methods of voting are unresolved. For voters, the operative rules are the rules in force when they take part. A policy that remains blocked is not an enforceable requirement during the block.

Mail-ballot limits remain on hold

Trump’s mail-ballot restrictions remain blocked. That means those restrictions are not taking effect as early voting begins, and mail-ballot voting is not currently subject to the blocked limits. The block concerns the restrictions themselves; it does not remove every rule that applies to voting by mail.

Early voting and mail voting are related because both let voters participate before Election Day, but they are not the same process. The opening of early voting does not lift the block, and the block does not delay the start of early voting. Each development has its own immediate effect: One opens a way to vote, while the other prevents the Trump restrictions from being enforced for now.

The next procedural question is whether the block stays in place through the voting period. Any change would require an official action affecting the restrictions. Until then, Virginia voting proceeds with early voting open and the Trump mail-ballot restrictions blocked.
