What to know about West Virginia’s 2026 elections

Federal races

West Virginia voters will choose one U.S. senator and representatives for both of the state’s U.S. House districts on Nov. 3, 2026. The Senate winner will serve a six-year term in one of the state’s two seats.

Democrat Rachel Anderson and Republican incumbent Shelley Capito are listed in the Senate contest. West Virginia’s other U.S. senator is Republican Jim Justice.

All U.S. House seats return to the ballot every two years, putting Districts 1 and 2 before voters in 2026. Republican Carol Miller currently represents District 1, while Republican Riley Moore represents District 2.

West Virginia’s statewide executive offices are also held by Republicans. Patrick Morrisey is governor, Randy E. Smith is lieutenant governor, Kris Warner is secretary of state, and John B. McCuskey is attorney general.

Presidential voting history

West Virginia’s results in the past three presidential elections show how the state voted before the 2026 midterm. Republican presidential candidates received 68.6% of the state’s vote in 2016, 68.6% in 2020 and 70% in 2024.

Democratic presidential candidates received 26.5% in 2016, 29.7% in 2020 and 28.1% in 2024. In the most recent presidential election, Donald Trump received 70% in West Virginia and Kamala Harris received 28.1%.

Trump’s 2024 margin in West Virginia was 41.9 percentage points. That was his second-largest margin among the 50 states, behind only Wyoming, and West Virginia awarded four electoral votes.
