Eligibility comes first

Mississippi voters who want to vote before Election Day must first determine whether they qualify for an absentee ballot under state rules. Eligibility controls access to absentee voting, including the option to cast an absentee ballot in person. A voter should make that check before planning around any absentee deadline. Qualifying to vote absentee and meeting the deadline are separate requirements; satisfying one does not satisfy the other.

The relevant deadline is the date by which a required absentee-voting step must be finished. Voters should identify the date that applies to their voting method and make clear what must happen by then. That distinction matters when a process includes more than one step.

The new in-person process

Mississippi has a new process for voters who cast absentee ballots in person. The process takes place before Election Day and remains subject to absentee eligibility and timing rules. Before using it, an eligible voter should know the required steps, where each step occurs and when it must be completed.

In-person absentee voting is not an open-ended alternative to Election Day voting. The state’s deadlines still set the time available to complete the process.

A practical checklist has three parts: confirm eligibility, identify the applicable deadline and follow the current in-person ballot steps. Voters should resolve those points before attempting to cast an absentee ballot because each part affects whether the process can be completed on time.
